Greenwald Study – Survey on Investment Risk and Guarantees (2007)
This survey recently released by NAVA indicates that fear of investment loss is widespread among older investors. Further, many are letting this fear prevent them from achieving the investment returns they need for financial security in retirement. Fear of investment loss leads to investing which is too conservative, with insufficient exposure to equities.
In addition, the NAVA survey points towards a solution that will be effective for many.

Annuitization vs. Systematic Withdrawal After the 2003 Tax Act
This new PricewaterhouseCoopers research study (October 2003), commissioned
by NAVA, compares the after-tax performance of deferred load variable annuities
and mutual funds, held outside qualified retirement accounts, under the new 2003
Tax Act. Using four different payout options, the analysis demonstrates
that even after the tax rate reductions, annuities are an attractive investment
for long-term savers, with break-even holding periods between variable annuities
and mutual funds of less than 12 years. It also shows that in a direct
comparison between annuitization and systematic withdrawals, annuitization has a
distinct advantage when it come to withdrawing your money.
